Program Kick-Off and What's Next

Our One Book, One Mesa County was off to a great start on January 24th. Thanks to those of you who attended! Jazz trombonist and Assistant Professor of Low Brass at CMU, Sean Flanigan, described the jazz club settings and sounds of the late 1930's. While Sean played several recordings, he also provided us with his knowledge and insight - describing the differences of music meant for high-society gatherings, that meant for dancing, and that of small, intimate club nightlife. Sean also described the importance of improvisation to jazz, and how jazz has evolved. To learn more about jazz, pick up CD's, DVD's, or books here at the Library, and get immersed in the sound. You can also check out Amor Towles' website, for a playlist selected by the author.

Meanwhile, One Book is just getting started. Join us Sunday afternoon at 1:30 for the first movie showing in our series. On Tuesday, the 31st, join us at 6:00 pm for a fashion show, highlighting vintage pieces that characters in the novel would have worn. "Rules of Civility" one of the "Best"

Of all the fine novels written in 2011, the Wall Street Journal placed Rules of Civility in their top ten Best of 2011 list. Towles, with his debut novel, is certainly impressing the critics.

Towles Interview from the Daily Sentinel

On December 23rd, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel ran an interview with One Book author Amor Towles. Interviewer Melinda Mawdsley asks Amor some great questions, and his answers reveal his writing methods and processes, and how his characters came to be. For instance, although this is his first novel, he's been writing since he was very young. Also, his idea for "Rules" was initiated over 20 years ago. He also drew inspiration from his grandmother, who had come of age, as the book's characters do, in the 1920's and 30's.

You'll also find a listing of our upcoming events. Our programs are meant to create an experience of the 1930's for our participants - you'll find the music, fashion, and art of that time, as well as historical perspectives (both national and local), literary interpretations, and thoughts on the changing meaning of civility.

One Book Event: The Comedy of Errors

This Sunday watch "The Comedy of Errors." This movie adaptation of one of the earliest plays written by William Shakespeare finds two sets of identical twins separated at birth suddenly in the same town. Mistaken identities lead to mishaps and accusations.

The adaptation features Roger Daltry of The Who (pictured, right) and the great British actor Charles Gray who is best know as Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the famous Bond villain from "Diamonds Are Forever."

Identity and the Self Wrap Up

One Book attendees from last night's Identity and the Self presentation were treated to an interesting discussion. Mesa State College professor Leslie Miles led the discussion focusing on identity, self, and limiting beliefs that hold you back. Using the character Lucy from "Await Your Reply" Miles was able to show how limiting beliefs can affect identity. Limiting beliefs come in all manner of styles, but the two things they have in common are that they are false and that they limit us in some way.

If you missed last night's event don't worry. There are still plenty of opportunities to participate in this year's One Book including multiple book discussions. Remember, if you attend a book discussion you will receive an invitation for you and one guest to a reception with One Book author Dan Chaon on March 4.

"Await Your Reply" raises significant questions about identity. Have you ever wondered about your own identity? What makes you the person that you are? Well we don't have that answer but there are some fun exercises you can do to gain a basic understanding of your personality type.

If you are interested in learning about yourself and have a free moment try taking the Enneagram test. This quick quiz will identify your personality type and provide examples of celebrities and politicians with similar personalities. It's a fun way to get to know yourself and it might just prepare you for the Identity and Self presentation on February 15.

One Book: The artwork

By now you've surely seen the dramatic flyers and ads for this year's One Book One Mesa County selection "Await Your Reply." This year’s thought-provoking custom art work was done by local artist Michael Goe.

“When people look at the figure, I want them to think about the internal struggle this character is having,” Goe said.

The composition is partially inspired by artist Robert Longo’s “Men in the Cities” series and expresses the many identity-related issues found in "Await Your Reply."

“The art piece is representational to the book, and as people read along, they will start to project their own opinions and identities onto this featureless figure,” Goe said.

For example the clothing makes you think the figure is a functional member of society but it gives no identifying clues as to who that person actually is. The abstract explosion expresses the figure’s internal turmoil and conflict and doubles as an ink blot test for the viewer to decode.

Meat is the Reward: Chaon's writing style

One Book author Dan Chaon has a unique take on writing. According to an article from NPR, Chaon forces himself to write a least one page every day. The punishment for not completing his goal? Vegetables.

"The punishment for not completing my page is that I have to eat a vegetarian meal the next day," Chaon said. Another reward for finishing a page is he gets to watch Lost, his current obsession.

One Book Officially Under Way

Last night One Book, One Mesa County officially kicked off with the first program hosted by internationally renowned comic book expert Charlie Novinskie.

"Alter Egos and Sidekicks: The Comic Book Presence in 'Await Your Reply'" showed how this year's selection shares many themes and story arcs commonly found in comic books. Novinskie used source material from the original Spiderman, Captain America, Thor, Batman, and Ironman comics to show how, and possibly explain why, the characters from "Await Your Reply" act like they do.

One Book events will be happening throughout the next two months so there are plenty of chances to participate. Remember: you don't have to have finished the book to participate in One Book events.

One Book Kicks Off

One Book, One Mesa County officially kicked off today with a press conference at Mesa County Libraries. Mayor Teresa Coons and Mesa County Commissioner Steve Acquafresca joined One Book committee members, library board members, and library staff at the Central Library to launch "Await Your Reply" by Dan Chaon.

As a play off the book's theme of identity, attendees were asked to sign off on the event by thumb printing the art work (pictured above, click to enlarge). Be sure to watch the local news tonight for more information about this year's One Book.

The Comic Book Presence in Await Your Reply

If you are just starting to read "Await Your Reply" already you'll notice identity plays a major role in the book. The One Book committee decided to play off that theme, kicking off this year's event lineup off with a program dedicated entirely to identity.

Internationally renowned comic book expert Charlie Novinskie hosts "Alter Egos and Sidekicks: The Comic Book Presence in Await Your Reply." Novinskie will present a slide show and talk about alter egos, the importance of sidekicks, and the battle between good and evil, all important themes to "Await Your Reply."

Novinskie currently serves on the Board of Directors of HERO Initiative, a non-profit organization that helps comic book creators in need of assistance.

In "The Geography of Bliss," Eric Weiner travels to an ashram in India seeking a shot at inner peace. There's no need to travel halfway around the world like Weiner. In Grand Junction, you can get instruction on good mental health from Lynn Albers and Sister Caroline Conway.

Conway will lead the first half of the program on Tai Chi, a Chinese Taoist art form. This program is designed to be fun and active. During the second half of the program, Albers will enlighten us about mantra yoga and pranayama, a breath awareness technique, follwed by a centering and rejuvenating meditation session.

Participation is encouraged for all those who attend.

Since we spend the majority of our lives at work, it makes sense to question how much work affects our happiness. Some aspects about work, it's challenges and responsibilities, it's environment and relationships, have great potential to impact us, whether beneficial or not. In the US, over 2.5 million people work over 48 hours a week. On average, we spend over 100 hours a year commuting. 51% of us take less than 30 minutes for lunch, and two thirds of the work force didn't use all our vacation days in 2009. If you're not happy at work, or considering hunting for a new field, consider these 10 Dynamic Ways to be Happier at Work:

1) Live close to work-commuting is the enemy of happiness.

2) Work for a small company-these employees are more satisfied.

3) Choose a 'happy' profession-something you feel is important.

That connectedness is often referred to as "social capital", and as important as it is to our individual happiness, it is rapidly declining over time, especially in the US and other western countries with individualisc cultures. Consider these facts--having friends over to the house is down by 45% over the last 25 years. Participation in clubs and civic organizations have also been cut in half. Why is this bad news for happiness? Community involvement is proven to boost individual happiness! Doing good makes us feel good. How do humans express happiness to one another? Facial expressions, especially smiling, aid in communicating our underlying emotions. Doesn't it make us happier to see smiles, or for us to smile ourselves? Some quick smile statistics: It takes only 16 muscles to smile, and 28 to frown. Even newborn babies have a preference for smiling faces, and babies reserve special smiles for their loved ones, especially mom. Smiling people are judged to be more pleasant, attractive, sincere, sociable, and competent than a non-smiling counterpart. Everyone knows that there are genuine and forced smiles, but, Eric learns, the Thai people are international experts at the art. "The Thai smile means more-and less-than the western smile," he writes. "It is...many masks...just as the Inuit are said to have many words for snow, the Thais have many words for smile...my favorite: yim mai awk, the I'm-trying-to-smile-but-can't-smile." Unltimately he concludes the Thai "variety pack" of smiles means he can't trust "any smile" any longer. Think you can tell the difference between real and fake smiles? Which of the above is genuine? At the outset of his journey to find geographical and often diverse meanings of happiness, Eric travels to the Netherlands to meet Ruut Veenhoven, the director of the World Database of Happiness, which he assures the reader is "no joke." This is where all the research of this new science behind Eric's grand query is gathered, analyzed and tested. Studying what makes people happy, instead of depressed, is actually a fairly new field of psychology, born just about twelve years ago. So how is this really studied? How do scientists measure? Eric quips, "Oh no. Major roadblock. How can you measure happiness? Happiness is a feeling, a mood, an outlook on life. Happiness can't be measured. Or can it?" This small Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayan mountains, which attracts Eric Weiner's visit due to its governmental policy of "Gross National Happiness," is grappling with embracing "officially sanctioned" globalization and simultaneously protecting their rich culture and identity from the likes of MTV. Eric Weiner observes, as he visits Switzerland, a high-ranking happiness country, that the Swiss consume "mass amounts" of chocolate, and notes there is "credible evidence" that chocolate makes us happier. In Moldova, the least happy country of them all, the "national dish", mamaliga, is "bland and mushy. And has something to do with corn." While there is a lot of pride to be had in well-made food and (sometimes) its cultural origins, there are actually very strong relationships between diet and mood. We all know its hard to be happy on a diet of caffeine and junk-food grease. So isn't just the opposite true-consuming certain foods could make us feel better; feel happier? Our 2009 author Jonathan Safran Foer talks about his upcoming nonfiction work "Eating Animals" in an interview with Paste magazine. Check it out here.

John Grogan has been riding the Marley money train since his visit in 2007. DVD sales for "Marley and Me," One Book's 2007 selection, have been through the roof. Since debuting at number 1, "Marley and Me" has sold over $30 million worth of DVDs.

Grand Junction local and 2008 author Aryn Kyle has also kept busy. Kyle will be appearing at the Crested Butte Writers Conference as a guest speaker June 19 - 21.

For the past three months we have all be reading "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" and we've been building momentum towards tonight's finale. Doors at the Avalon open tonight at 6 p.m. We are expecting a full house so get there early to ensure yourself a good seat. For those who have V.I.P. tickets, make sure to bring them to tonight's event. V.I.P. seating is located on the ground level near the stage. Teen Enthusiasm & Insight

Monday night at the Central Library, some teens gathered to discuss Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. Two library staff members led the discussion and shared that the teens' enthusiasm for the book was contagious and encouraging. From what the Committee has heard from the teen community, this choice was a hit. Teens appreciate the modern book choice and are excited that they will get to meet the author of a book they truly enjoy; some considered it "a perfect book choice for teens." The Committee is pleased that this book was able to catch the interest and following of both teens and adults.

Shawna, former Teen Librarian, said that she "appreciated the depth of analysis they contributed." She looks forward to re-reading the book in light of the discussion, with her eyes open to aspects the teens caught that she missed in her first reading.

I have been so excited about the discussions at the library branches! Our groups have included not only middle-aged readers, but young readers as well. What strikes me is the breadth of the responses. People like the book for so many different reasons: the subject matter, the voice of Oskar, the graphic qualities of the book, the quest itself, the interesting Blacks....I am finding that this novel has a big reach. So many people are excited to meet the author--to see who it is who could put together such characters in a heart-rending yet delightful story.

Greedy cooperate raider Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas in his Academy Award winning role) mentors a young, impatient stock trader, Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen), during the 1980s boom economy. According to Gekko, "greed is good," and he will stop at nothing to make a profit. "Wall Street" draws many parallels to today's economic woes such as insider trading and corporate manipulation of stock prices. In preparation of the author event on March 27th, some Committee members had the opportunity to speak with JSF about his ideas for the author event. It is exciting to learn first-hand of his enthusiasm about our project and connecting with our community. This is what he shared:

"I enjoy [One Book, One Community events] as much out of selfishness as for the readers' benefit. Engaging with the readers directly in conversation allows for a continued creation of the book which makes the life of the writer, as well as the book itself, richer." Foer added that he envisions One Book events as a "large book group."

New York Film Festival - "West Side Story"

A Haunting Little Moment

This past Sunday a group from Mesa State College got together to discuss Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. The group was about a dozen all told, a few faculty members and a nice mix of students from various backgrounds and a couple of their spouses and friends.

We met at a restaurant, ordered some provisions, and then began discussing the novel. I have often encountered limited success in discussion settings, with some people doing most of the talking, or the conversation coming too quickly to a settled idea. But this was quite the opposite. I think it is a testament to the very personal connections readers develop with this book that everyone was eager to talk and there were no shortage of different topics and interpretations to be had. I’ve read this novel several times now, and still I found myself being directed by the group to ideas I hadn’t thought of and little moments that had not quite registered before.

Perhaps the most interesting one of these came near the end of the afternoon. Conversation had started to drift a little, the way it will when a group of people bond over a good book. Suddenly one of the people at the table asked “What do you think of the Stephen Hawking letter?”

In the novel, Stephen Hawking is one of Oskar’s great heroes, and Oskar has apparently written the famous scientist numerous letters. On several occasion we see facsimiles of Hawking’s form letters—ones that promise a personal response when time allows. When that personal letter eventually arrives it is quite a dramatic and moving moment for both Oskar and the reader.

However, I must confess, there was an aspect of the Hawking letter that I passed over. As the member of our discussion pointed out, Hawking has what on a closer look proves to be a very odd bit of wisdom to pass on to Oskar. Oskar has a penchant for inventing—fabulous inventions in the root sense of that term, ones that are beautiful, lyrical, and quite heart-breakingly impossible. Oskar himself sees this need to invent as a symptom of the pain he is feeling after his father’s death. He has apparently asked Hawking when he thinks he will be able to stop this inventing. Hawking’s reply? “What if you never stop inventing? Maybe you’re not inventing at all.”

It was a moment that ended up stumping our group. Not in a bad way, I think. But if anyone out there would care to offer their take on this haunting little moment, please post a response with your two cents.

Kiva Book Club Discussion: How Do You Let Someone You Love Grieve?

This was one of several themes discussed from Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by the Kiva Book Club at Mesa County Libraries' Central Branch. Several members told their personal stories from 9/11 or other times of great personal loss. Others wanted to discuss Foer’s unique writing style and the methods used in the book.

The group agreed that Oskar’s quest with the key helped him to move on from his father’s death. We shared our stories of how some families don’t talk intimately when they are grieving ... and that might be a necessary part of the grief process. A woman who came for the first time brought up the idea that Oskar’s mom perhaps saw much of his dad in Oskar, in his intelligence, his thoughts and how he processed the world. She suggested that Oskar’s mom allowed Oskar to search for what the key opened because she understood how much he, like his dad, needed that process. A high schooler who came told how hard it was for her to read the book because her dad was in the next room while she read it. Oskar’s loss of his dad stung her. He is a part of her life every day and, since she is preparing to leave for college in the fall, she won’t see him as much and knows that will be hard.

We had an interesting evening of discussion, which ended with everyone receiving their VIP tickets to see Jonathan Safran Foer speak at the Avalon Theatre on Friday, March 27, 2009.

New York Film Festival - "On the Waterfront"

Winner of 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor Marlon Brando, "On the Waterfront" follows the story of ex-prize fighter (Brando) turned longshoreman and his struggle to stand up to his corrupt union bosses. New manuscript for Foer?

One Book, One Mesa County author Jonathan Safran Foer appears to be working on a new manuscript. Having taken on the Holocaust in "Everything Is Illuminated" and September 11 in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," it looks like Foer's next topic is that of factory farming. The new book will be his first attempt at nonfiction. An active board member for Farm Forward, Foer read from his new manuscript at a Farm Forward launch party in New York City. New York Film Festival - "Breakfast at Tiffany's"

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is a celebration of the people and boroughs that make up New York City. In order to better appreciate the journey that young Oskar undertakes, the One Book committee has selected four classic New York films that perfectly capture the charm and mystique of the Big Apple. The first film up is the delicious "Breakfast at Tiffany's" staring Audrey Hepburn. The film starts at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 21, in the Central Library Program Area.

One Book, One Mesa County events are now underway. Tonight John McConnell will present "Inventions: Explorations of Imagination." He will have inventions and hands-on items to demonstrate.

Tomorrow, library book discussions begin. There are six opportunities to join plus a special book discussion for teens. People who join the discussions will receive two tickets for V.I.P. seating at the author presentation and will be invited to a reception with the author.

One Book Officially Begins

One Book, One Mesa County Co-Chair Janine Rider officially announces the 2009 selection of "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer at the February 12 press conference. As well as announcing the event schedule and book discussion line up, Rider also introduced Book Crossing. The idea behind Book Crossing is to leave copies of "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" in the 'wild' for anybody to pick up and read. A label located on the inside cover shows you how to register or look up the book, and a bookmark has more information on the program.
